Projects Implemented in the Past

1. Villupuram Housing Project (Rehabilitation and Reconstruction): 1978–1984

Constructed 250 hazard safe houses to the Dalits, the victims of communal clash, provided legal assistance.

2. Non– Formal Education: 1985–1988

Literacy and functional literacy organized through non formal educational classes in 30 centres of 10 villages in Kanai and Gingee Blocks.

3. Cluster School Movement: 1989-91

A comprehensive development programme in a cluster of ten villages within the radius of 8 kms along with the educational programme was implemented

4. Resource Centre for Education and Development: 1992–95

Training programmes organized to social leaders, youth groups, women, publications on horticulture, sericulture, nature cure and development programme. Computer Skill Training to 500 students in six centres.

5. IFAD Assisted Development of Women programme: 1992–97

Formation of 100 women gropus covering the women who are living in below the poverty line and imported training on various topics. Linked these groups with Govt., Development and welfare programs

6. Village Health Nurse Training: 1994-95

Health training to 500 village nurses (8 batches – 15 days residential programme)

7. Students Educational and Leadership Camp: 1995 – 2005

25-day residential program organized in three phases to 1200 final year school children from poor economic background especially from rural area in 15 years.

8. TN Corp. for Dev. of Women Sponsored Mahalir Thittam: 1997 – till now

Formed, trained and being nurtured more than 5000 women SHGs in six blocks of Villupuram District. Created awareness on women empowerment, increased the income earning capacity and promoting savings and credit activities.

9. Marketing for Marginalized: 1998 – 2004

Empowered 2000 rural women through by providing an opportunity of access to market by organized Entrepreneur Development Program.

10. Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Programme to the affected people of Tsunami in Coastal villages of Tamil Nadu: 2004– 2007

Imparted Disaster Risk Reduction Education, Psyco-socio counseling to the persons who were in trauma, Constructed of 182 houses to the Tsunami victims, constructed 2 Disaster Rescue centres, Supported alternative income generation activities and Supported to get livelihood means.

11. Housing program: 2005–2011

Constructed 207 Disaster safe concrete houses for the flood affected Dalit in 3 Village in Kandamangalam Block.

12. University Study Centre (PRIDE): Since 2005

Kalvi Kendra is affiliated by Periyar University of Salem as a study centre. It plays the role of Motivating the rural poor youth group for higher education.

13. Providing Drinking Water: 2006

Kinaru Program provided safe drinking water to six village communities in Vanur block. Digging bore wells, laying pipelines for public fountain and formed water committee.

14. Tamil Nadu Health System Project: 2006-2011

Patient counseling, in 2 Government hospitals and 24 hrs Ambulance Services maintained in 4 Blocks.

15. HIV/AIDS Awareness building and mainstreaming: 2006-2012

HIV/Aids awareness training imparted to the members and leaders of Self-Help groups in Villupuram Dist. Internal streamlining of HIV /Aids in the organization.

16. Risk cover for lives and livelihoods: Since 2008

As a measure of reducing risk due to disaster, lives and livelihood of poor families. More than 30000 members covered every year.

17. Educational Scholarship

Two final year school children of the SHG were given Rs.1200 each as an educational scholarship. 15200 students availed the scholarship.

18. Improving education standard of Rural Poor children: 2008-2010

The objective of preparing poor children to compete with the students from the rich background a new program was designed which intends to give the quality of education to the poor. Promoted community coaching centres, given special coaching in the academic subjects, promoted cultural skills, formed and strengthened education committee - CSR Program.

19. CBDRM – Community Based Disaster Risk Management: 2009-2010

Community Based Disaster Risk Management programme was organized. Participatory risk assessment carried out. The community also prepared a contingency plan for the disasters flood and cyclone.

20. Construction of House-hold Toilets: 2009-2010

100 beneficiaries were identified and imparted training on attitudinal change towards eliminating open defecation which resulted constructed and using individual household toilets in their families.

21. World Bank assisted Vulnerability Reduction in Coastal Communities: 2009-2014

Third party Facilitation role played by Kalvi Kendra: Revalidation of beneficiaries, awareness generation to the housing beneficiaries on prevention of pollution and facilitated people participation in constructing houses. Monitored construction of 1748 houses to the Tsunami victims.

22. School safety programme: 2010

Survey conducted on school safety in 10 schools. Organized rescue demonstration. Motivated PRI leaders to create disaster safe infrastructures in the schools. Provided fire extinguishers.

23. Disaster Risk Reduction Program: 2011-2017

Awareness created and Rescue team formed for Protection of human lives, constructed 450 hazard safe houses and 17 disaster rescue centres, protected agriculture and Livelihood against Disaster, awareness generated on early warning system and disaster risk reduction measures to the community, Motivation the elected Panchayat leaders to tap government sources for disaster response, promoted Save the Earth movement.

24. IFAD assisted (PTSLP) Post Tsunami Sustainable Livelihood Programme in Marakkanam and Vanur Block. 2012-2019

Kalvi Kendra two cluster resource centres in the coastal area. Disaster preparedness among the community and school safety programme to the school going children were organized. Livelihood infrastructure created. Livelihood is insured. 140 SHGs are formed and trained in carrying out economic activities.

25. Immediate relief for cyclone and flood affected communities: 2012-2015

Relief activities in 20 villages to 4500 affected families of Thane, the ghostly cyclone devastated a part of Tamil Nadu. Immediate relief also extended to the affected communities in South Tamil Nadu. Immediate relief provided to 5000 flood affected families in Chennai slums and other Districts. Fumigation process had been carried out in Chennai slums with the support of Godrej.

26. Credit Linkages for Livelihood & Income Generation: Since 2014

NABFINS [Nabard Financial Services Limited]
Kalvi Kendra facilitates linkages with NABFINS to provide credit facility to the women for promotion, expansion, commercialization of agriculture and allied livelihood activities. The repayment of the loan is 100%. The credit linkage has been made a tune of 187 crores as on March 2020. ICICI
Kalvi Kendra also facilitated linkage with ICICI bank to help people in vain. ICICI bank have provided about Rs.35 crores.

27. Housing Microfinance: 2015-2019

Low income segments and women in rural and semi-urban areas were identified and linked them with the SPHM organization and facilitated to avail financial assistance to construct 150 houses.

28. Elimination of Open Defecation to improve Health & Hygiene: 2016 - 2019

This programme aims to eliminate open defecation to improve health, hygiene and sanitation in 209 villages. It is being achieved through adopting different strategies which break the mindset of the people and inculcate the habit of constructing and using toilets. Constructed 21000 house-hold toilets.

29. Preparation of Perspective plan for Backward areas of Villupuram district -2016- 18

Kalvi Kendra was appointed as a resource organization by the District Administration of Villupuram to prepare the perspective plan for the backward blocks in the district. Kalvi Kendra collected primary data and secondary data by way of applying PLA (Participatory Learning Appraisal) tools. The problems in implementing Government schemes, gaps and the needs of the people were identified and the recommendations were made on the basis of SWOT analysis of each block.

30. Preparation of District Human Resource Development Report: 2016 - 2018

State Planning Commission selected Kalvi Kendra as resource institution to prepare District Human Resource Development Report of Villupuram District. Kalvi Kendra constituted a team of experts and completed the District Human Resource Development Report for Villupuram district.

31. MKSP (Women farmers Development Programme): 2016-2020

MKSP (Women farmers Development Programme) supported by NRLM, Govt. of India. An innovative initiative to increase the agriculture production, promote organic farming and marketing the product of 4000 small and marginal farmers. A package of an Intensive training programme for 11 days on applying technology in agriculture, organic farming, producing and using bio-fertilizers and pesticides and marketing the products through producer groups etc. were carried out.

32. Organic Cluster: 2017-2020

Two organic clusters have been formed and more than 150 women farmers were identified and enrolled as members in the organic clusters. They were given systematic training in organic farming. The keystone foundation imparted training on participatory certification the organic products
